This screen print was created as part of a coffee branding project for a fictional café called Sirens Brew. The design explores the atmosphere and energy of a busy coffee shop while incorporating a mermaid theme inspired by the sea-faring history of the coffee trade. Coffee has historically been transported across oceans through global shipping routes, and the imagery of sirens and mermaids was used to connect the branding to this maritime history.
From top to bottom, the print follows the journey through the café: beginning with the bustling queue waiting to order, moving down to the barista making drinks (inspired by the illustrators experience working part-time in a café) and ending with customers enjoying their coffee, chatting, reading, and talking on the phone. The composition combines everyday café culture with playful mermaid characters to create a lively and imaginative scene.
The work was also influenced by the history of coffee houses as spaces for conversation and community. Often referred to as “penny universities,” coffee houses historically provided places where people could meet to discuss politics, culture, and social issues. This idea helped shape the focus on interaction and shared experience throughout the print, presenting the café as a social and cultural space.
During the development process, research into mural artists inspired the use of bold shapes, simplified forms, strong outlines, and limited colour palettes. This influenced the creation of a complex composition while maintaining a graphic and visually clear style that suited the screen-printing process.
